The Science and Technology Department of Dr. Josefa Jara Martinez High School, started the school year 2018 – 2019, with the Election of the Yes – O and SCAAP Officers. Meetings were scheduled by the respective advisers of said clubs, for the Planning and Implementation of various science activities. Initial projects were the “Shoot that Kalat” and the Clean – Up Drive.In compliance with the “Clean and Green” campaign of the DepEd, an URBAN GARDEN on one side of the new SB building was initiated last August. The Quezon City government provided some bags of garden soil, seeds and other materials and tools to be used. Medicinal, ornamental, flowering and some vegetable plants were grown in the garden, in addition to a number of existing trees in the area. Eggplants, patola, kamias, alugbati and ginger were some of the produce from the garden. In celebration of the Science and Technology Month, last September with the theme, “Science for the People: Liberating Education Through Innovation, school – based activities such as Film Showing, Science Trivia, Poster Making, Science Quiz and SYMBO were done inside the classrooms, during the science classes, to ensure 100% participation of the students and in conformity to the DepEd’s “Time on Task” Policy. A Mini Science exhibit was also put up last October 2-4, during the school’s 24th foundation anniversary celebration, where recycled innovative projects of students were displayed. Some selected students and teachers also participated in the District Science Fair contests, held at DARSSTHS last September 19, 2018. Our school got the 1st and 4th place respectively in the SIP Applied Team Category and Improvisation (Student Category), with the guidance and supervision of Mrs. Sandhay M. Torio, our Science Research Adviser. Mrs. Mary Klausky M. Pazon and Mrs. Sandhay M. Torio, also participated in the SIM and got the 1st and 3rd place respectively. Selected science teachers also participated in the “Improvisation Contest”. During the Division Science Fair, held at Juan Sumulong High School, selected Gr. 10 students represented the school in the “Robotics Contest.”, last October 4, 2018. Our school’s STRIVE representatives, Ron Ron Villanueva and Rodel Habal, of Gr. 8- Sampaguita, proved their 100% interest in said training for having a complete attendance since the start of the training to the present. Two of our Science teachers are taking their Master’s in the Graduate School, with Science as their area of specialization. To further enhance and enrich their knowledge and skills, some teachers attended trainings and seminars. Mrs. Mary Klausky M. Pazon, Physics teacher was declared “Most Outstanding Teacher’ this year, next to Mrs. Marciana R. Duran, Biology teacher who was also declared “Most Outstanding Teacher” last year. Science LAC sessions were also conducted at least twice a month, where teachers discuss and share important and relevant ideas and concepts, through brainstorming, mentoring and others. To improve Science Instruction, some forms of intervention were done by the teacher such as giving of 3–5 HOTS questions before and after the discussion of the topic/unit, peer tutoring among the students, especially in the higher sections and remedial classes for slow learners. Science teachers usually hold their classes in the laboratory room, especially when discussing or presenting lessons, using audiovisual equipment like computer, TV set and projector, by informing in advance the Science Department Head, for proper re-scheduling. Teachers also borrow or avail the tools, equipment and other materials in the laboratory, anytime they need them in their classrooms. On-going projects of the department are the “Bawas Basura” and “Waste Segregation”, where students are trained to recycle, reuse and reduce biodegradable as well as non – biodegradable waste materials.
